Create-An-Image is an optional program often used by therapists who use Old Me New Me in their counseling sessions. The drawings provide insights to the counselor that is not otherwise obtained in a regular counseling session. The goals of this art program include helping children and adolescents lessen their behavioral problems and emotional pain, releasing their negative thoughts and emotions, raising their tolerance to stressful situations and lessening their need for medication. The images created by participants using Create-An-Image/Relaxation (CAIR) therapy will help them internalize the Old Me New Me concepts which can be easily understood and recalled from memory. Using the program over time will increase their ability to function at higher levels, deal more effectively with life's stressful situations, enhance their creativity and create more peace and contentment in their lives and the lives of those with whom they live. Ms. Lupin chose to add an optional art therapy program to reinforce the concepts being taught in the CD program and to encourage the use of symbols from the unconscious that reveal so much more than words alone can. Though this is not an art therapy program, instructions are included so that both teachers and counselors who are not trained as art therapist will be able to use it successfully and safely. Before we learned to talk, we were able to visualize. Humans tend to think in images as well as words. Memories are storied in a holistic way and include sights, sounds, emotions, aromas, etc. Emotions, memories and feelings are accessed more easily by the use of symbols and pictures rather than by the use of language alone. Often words are inadequate to express concepts and the depth of emotion that comes forth. Since memories are stored in the brain in a non linear, holistic fashion, they must be accessed in the same way. Facilitators also frequently find that many children and teens do not have adequate auditory processing or verbal skills to express important concepts and emotions that need to be identified. However, re-experiencing these traumas can be over whelming emotionally and is not necessary in order for them to be released. The lack of adequate verbal skills is one reason that talk therapy is not successful with many children and teens and is often a waste of time and money for parents. It has also been found that boys especially do not have the vocabulary to express emotions well. Based on the author's experience, young people love this right brain approach to therapy, become involved with it and greatly benefit from the process. Facilitators will be amazed and pleased at the power of art and symbols to reveal messages from the soul as well as the creativity that can come from the use of this program in combination with the Old me New Me CD program. Parents whose children are currently using the Old Me New Me program at home might suggest this art program to their child's therapist as a possible adjunct in their therapeutic process. “Regardless of diagnosis, I have found that all of my clients have
two things in common: 1) they are under psychological stress and 2)
they are experiencing a loss of internalized control. I have found
that the Old Me, New Me program helps reduce psychological stress,
and, by its very nature, gives the client physiological and
psychological control. I very often begin noticing positive changes
within the first few sessions. I use the Old Me, New Me program as
the foundation of nearly all of my therapy, and will continue to do
so. Besides the relationship developed between therapist and client,
I have found the program to be the most effective therapeutic
technique I have discovered."
