MIMI LUPIN, MA, LPC, LSSP (Retired)
Mimi was a national trainer for Active Parenting, Inc., teaching counselors to present the Active Parenting programs. She developed the Old Me New Me, an evidence-based mindfulness audio program that helps children deal more effectively with emotional problems and stress based on her experience in working with children of all ages. Published originally by several major publishers, it is now available on the internet and is used by parents, school counselors, mental health counselors and children's hospitals. The program has had over sixteen published research studies proving its effectiveness.
The latest study completed in 2010, used Old Me New Me with a group of children involved in Katrina, and showed these children effectively released the effects of that trauma and their PTSD very effectively and had less traumatic long lasting effects as compared to a group not using the program. That study was presented 2010 at the APA national convention in New Orleans. Now available at: www.OldMeNewMe.com. Her foundation’s documentary film on emotional healing for divorcing parents, The Place of Refuge, is being filmed in Kona, Hawaii and will help parents protect their children’s emotional health during divorce, www.calmingthestormofdivorce.org.
OLD ME NEW ME: WHAT THIS PROGRAM DOES
For more than thirty years published research on the Old Me New Me has demonstrated the effectiveness of this program in changing children’s behavior. The Old Me New Me stories have been used to help children reduce anxiety, aggression, frustration, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and oppositional behavior while improving concentration.
This program also helps develop self-esteem, self-control, optimism, and other aspects of resiliency. These changes allow children to handle life’s challenges with less tension, stress and trauma which leads to better physical and emotional health.
HOW THIS PROGRAM WORKS:
When a child becomes angry, the heart rate goes up along with the child’s blood pressure and muscle tension. It is difficult to control to anger until you calm down. The Old Me New Me helps the child learn to take a deep breath which helps calm both the nervous system and the child. The program works on both mind and body and helps the child put these techniques into practice in their daily lives over a period of time. This program not only helps children relax but to go to sleep more easily as well.
DIFFERENT STORIES WORK ON DIFFERENT PROBLEMS
The program is comprehensive and addresses most of the behavioral problems that many children have. Each short story uses imagery, sound effects and audio to take the child on a journey into his imagination as the story teller talks about different problems the child may be experiencing and how to handle them best. Parents can then focus on or tailor the program to the specific needs of their child and emphasize certain stories. Often, the child picks the story that he knows he needs to hear and listens to that one repeatedly. For example, a child may pick the “Trip To The Star” story because it helps children realize that they have “self-power” which increases both self- esteem and self -control. These qualities help children love and appreciate themselves and improves their relationships.
HOW THIS PROGRAM HELPS CHILDREN WITH THEIR FEELINGS AND BEHAVIORS
The Old Me New Me encourages children to acknowledge their feelings and to talk about them. The stories teach a way to express these feelings appropriately which helps change behavior. This is a first step in resolving issues related to their feelings. Change your children’s lives for the better today with the Old Me New Me program. Your children will be happier and emotionally healthy as a result.
